Hudson, FL – A 44-year-old man was killed Saturday evening after a car struck him while he was crossing U.S. 19.
The Florida Highway Patrol believes the man was pushing a shopping cart across the highway around 6:45 p.m. when he was hit by a Mercury Grand Marquis driving north.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The impact of the collision knocked the shopping cart into a Honda Accord in the left turn lane.
The driver of the Mercury and his passenger escaped the collision without injury.
The accident is still under investigation.
A pedestrian is no match for a motor vehicle. The sheer weight and force of a car can leave a pedestrian suffering from severe and catastrophic injuries or result in wrongful death. Every year across the United States, more than 110,000 pedestrians are injured in motor vehicle accidents and nearly 60,000 die from those injuries. Most pedestrian accidents are caused by negligent or careless drivers who fail to pay attention to what is going on in the roadway.
Pedestrian accidents can arise from numerous reckless actions, including:
• Inattentive drivers talking on a cell phone, texting eating, etc.
• Speeding Motorists
• Drivers that Fail to Yield the Right of Way to Pedestrians at Marked Crosswalks
• Motorists Turning into the Path of Pedestrians at an Intersection
• Drivers Operating their Vehicles Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs
