Biker Killed by Car in Dade City

An 81-year-old man died Monday after colliding with a car on U.S. 301, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Dade City man was riding south on the sidewalk along the highway around 8 a.m., according to the FHP. When he tried to cross the highway’s southbound lanes, he was hit by a Chevrolet Cruze driven by 69-year-old man, also traveling south.

The man was taken to an area hospital, where he died of his injuries, according to the FHP.

Bicycle accidents involving cars are a huge problem. Cyclists, like pedestrians, suffer the major brunt of injuries mostly due to the sheer size difference. Unlike occupants of passenger cars, who are protected by seat belts, airbags, and the walls of the car itself, cyclists have minimal protection aside from a helmet. Cyclists are no match for the weight of a several-ton car.

Due to the statute of limitations for bicycle accident cases, victims have a limited time in which to file their cases.
